Lighting is one of the most competitive tracks in export trade, with heavy commoditisation and fierce price wars. In the AI search era, the basis of competition is shifting from "who is cheaper and who ranks higher" to "who AI recommends first". When an overseas buyer asks ChatGPT to "recommend a few Chinese LED lighting suppliers", the companies named go straight onto the shortlist. The rest are skipped.

LED lighting going global: from trade shows and platforms to AI recommendations

The lighting industry used to find customers through three things: trade shows, B2B platforms, and referrals from existing customers. All three still work today, but AI is siphoning traffic away from each of them:

  • buyers heading to a trade show first ask AI which Chinese suppliers are in that category;
  • buyers on a platform no longer just scroll product listings — they let AI shortlist for them;
  • when an existing customer makes a referral, the new buyer still goes to AI to verify you.

In other words, AI has become an unavoidable link in the buyer's decision chain — whatever you used to rely on to win customers, the buyer will check you once more in AI.

A real case with 100-plus export markets: a Shenzhen-based optoelectronic company

In Shenzhen there is an optoelectronic company making LED lighting. Over ten years it walked a very typical path.

Early stage: steadying the stance first

The company first joined Alibaba.com in 2015 and stayed quiet for the first two years — no rush for volume; it built the foundations solidly instead.

Growth stage: leaning on platform tools

In 2020 it drew on platform products such as Gold Supplier (Jinpin Chengqi) and Wending, and its performance rose exponentially. In 2022 it joined SKA, and today it holds a 5-star rating year-round, with 300+ inquiries a month on average and 1300+ TradeManager conversations.

Today: brand going global, pushing for the top of the industry

With platform support, the company's LED products sell to more than 100 countries overseas; in 2024 it held a TOP5 position in the industry and is pushing for TOP1.

Worth noting: once a company's products have reached more than 100 countries, its next bottleneck is no longer "can I be found" but "am I on the list AI recommends" — because the higher-value the buyer, the more likely they are to ask AI for a shortlist first.

Three levers for AI search optimization in the lighting business

Write product differentiators as conclusions AI can cite

Lighting is heavily commoditised, and what buyers most want to know when they ask AI is how these suppliers differ. So your content has to give clear, differentiated conclusions — for example, which specifications to choose for different scenarios (industrial lighting, outdoor landscape, commercial spaces), and which certification standards fit which markets.

What AI cites is content that helps a buyer make a judgement, not empty lines like "our quality is excellent".

Build authority with certifications and export track record

In lighting exports, buyers care about certifications (CE, RoHS, UL, ERP energy efficiency and others) and export track record. Put that information in structured form on your website and on authoritative sources, and only then does AI have grounds to trust you.

Cover both the China and overseas lines

For a lighting exporter, there are trading companies at home in China and end buyers overseas. Domestic customers ask Doubao and DeepSeek in Chinese; overseas buyers ask ChatGPT and Gemini in English. The two sides prefer different sources, so they need separate plans.

Where to start

Diagnose first. In Doubao, DeepSeek and ChatGPT, run queries such as "LED lighting manufacturer China" — and the Chinese equivalent on the domestic engines — to see whether your brand appears in the answers, who it is listed alongside, and whether the facts are right.

Get a clear picture of where you stand before you start, so the effort is not wasted.
