AI Mentions You — Why Has No Buyer Contacted You?1
Issuing time:2026-10-24 09:30 You have been working on GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) for a while. Your name finally shows up in AI answers — and nothing happens to your inquiry inbox. So the boss asks: wasn't being mentioned by AI supposed to create opportunities? Here is the conclusion up front: three gates stand between "AI mentioned you" and "a buyer contacted you" — whether the answer offers a clickable exit, whether your website can hold the visitor, and whether your contact details can be found. Judge only the first gate and you will conclude, wrongly, that GEO does not work. The boundary, clearly stated: this article is about the conversion path, and it promises no inquiry outcome. Sometimes a buyer simply isn't ready yet — that case is covered too.
Gate one: is there an exit in the AI answer? Two terms to separate first: being mentioned and being linked are not the same thing. Some AI answers name a brand outright and attach a clickable source. Others mention it in passing with no citation at all. For a buyer these mean entirely different things — with the first he can click through; with the second all he retains is a name. Google explained this on its own blog: AI Overviews added more prominent ways to surface website links, including links shown along the side on desktop and inline links placed directly inside the answer text. Google also said that in testing these changes increased traffic to supporting websites compared with the earlier design. One number worth knowing: a study measured how completely AI answers cite their sources (arXiv:2410.22349, a preprint, not peer-reviewed) — the sources actually listed accounted for only 20% to 25% of the material the answer had read. In other words: not being listed does not mean not being read. Your content may well have shaped the answer without earning the position a buyer can click. Scope note: the figure describes how completely citations are displayed; it cannot be reversed into "no link means no effect at all". One common confusion, cleared up: a citation inside an AI answer is not an ad slot. Ads on the search page occupy their own slots and are labelled as ads; the two are not mixed. Buying exposure and being cited by AI are two separate roads. Gate two: can your website hold the visitor? This is the gate most often overlooked — because the problem is not on AI's side, it is in your own house. The moment a buyer opens the link, the question in his head is: does this company actually do this? If the page takes too long to answer, he backs out and asks somewhere else. A few checkpoints:
None of these four require optimization tricks. They require reading your own page from the buyer's side of the screen. Gate three: can your contact details be found? This one sounds the most basic, and in practice it fails the most often.
One more easily missed point: if you do not publish pricing — as most B2B services do not — then "how to get in touch" becomes more important, not less. A buyer who cannot see a price has exactly one move left: find your contact details and ask. If that step stalls, every earlier effort stops there. Or maybe the buyer simply isn't ready yetBeyond those three gates, there is a case that is not broken — just early. Buyers usually ask AI during research — not yet ready to pick a supplier, just mapping the market and building a list. Being cited means you entered his candidate pool; it does not mean he will contact you today. The practical meaning: do not equate being cited with receiving an inquiry. It is closer to holding a position on the buyer's list. Mentions also differ in strength — a leading position in the answer and a passing reference are very different outcomes. That is why we keep insisting on watching trends and position shifts rather than asking only whether you appeared. Three common questionsAI mentioned me but gave no link. What now?Do the part you control: state the key facts clearly, keep the facts consistent across the site, and write content in a form that answers the question head-on. Whether AI selects you and whether it adds a link is not ours to decide. Whether the content is clear, credible and easy to extract is the half we do decide. How do I tell "no exit" from "the website cannot hold them"?Run a single-variable test: ask AI once and check whether the answer carries a link to your site. Link present — the problem is likely at gates two or three. Mentioned but no link — the problem is at gate one. One test separates them; no guessing needed. Should I build a dedicated "AI landing page"?No. What a visitor needs after the click is content that answers his kind of question, not a page built for AI's sake. Improving the wording and structure of existing pages beats adding a new one — and those existing pages are exactly what AI judges. Where this leaves youTo pull this together: being mentioned by AI is the start of the chain, not its end. The full chain runs: AI mentions you, an exit is offered, the buyer clicks, the site makes clear what you do, he finds your contact details, contact happens. Break any link and every earlier effort stops right there. You can walk the whole thing right now: ask AI a question your buyer would ask, and if you appear in the answer, follow the buyer's path — click, read the page, try to find the contact details. One honest rehearsal exposes more than any dashboard. Yihang Network (Shenzhen) previously worked in cross-border B2B and Alibaba.com-related services, and has been extending into GEO since 2024. Our approach is to find where the chain breaks first, and only then decide which segment to repair. Data and effect boundaries: the citation-completeness study cited here (arXiv:2410.22349) is a preprint and not peer-reviewed; its figure describes how completely citations are displayed and cannot be reversed into "not shown means no effect". Google's statements about link presentation in AI Overviews and about traffic come from its official blog and are observations from its own testing; they do not represent results for any specific website. The requirement that structured data match visible text comes from Google's official documentation. None of the above constitutes a promise about inquiry volume, conversion rate or business outcomes. The methods described raise the probability of being retrieved, cited and clicked; they do not guarantee that a company will appear in any AI answer, and they promise no timeline or business result.
